Conquering the Blank Page
An online class with Ian Grom, composer, arranger, and co-founder of Box Six.
This one’s for the people who freeze at bar one. I’ve been there: that moment where the screen’s empty, the piano’s silent, and you start wondering if you’ve forgotten how to write. You haven’t. The only cure for a blank page is writing on it. In this class, I turn the blank page into a practical problem. We’ll cover how to start before you feel ready, generate momentum, and use limited-note melodies to force focus. I’ll show you how I use the piano as a laboratory for voicing and register, and how I hear attack versus sustain. Momentum is the secret ingredient, and if you keep showing up, the great stuff sneaks in.
What I actually cover
- How I create momentum before I feel ready
- Using a five-note melody to force better decisions
- Why I treat the piano as a laboratory
- What transcription teaches that theory alone cannot
- Hearing the difference between attack and sustain
