Inside the Score: Uninvited Pulse 2017

An online class with Ian Grom, composer, arranger, and co-founder of Box Six.

The Uninvited has been one of those shows that still sticks with people to this day. We have written A LOT of music, but few shows have had such a lasting impression on people so I couldn't be happier to pull back the curtain and show you all the inner workings of how we brought the score to life. I’ll show you how a sparse opening establishes the tonal world before rhythmic density enters, how motives return through augmentation and register shifts, and why battery entrances work best as structural pivots instead of a constant layer. We’ll examine vertical voicing in the ballad, harmonic DNA carried through transitions, and how I align musical pacing with visual staging. You’ll see how individual orchestration choices connect to the larger arc of an indoor percussion production.

What I actually cover

  • Establishing the tonal world before rhythmic density arrives
  • Returning motives through augmentation and register shifts
  • Using battery entrances as structural pivot points
  • Expanding the ballad through deliberate vertical voicing
  • Carrying the show’s harmonic DNA through every transition
1:07 from the class. Watch how the fastest rhythmic articulation in a phrase determines my mallet choice for the entire passage.
